An hour’s drive from the Akureyri Airport, the historic village of Siglufjörður is located at the top of Iceland’s famed Troll Peninsula. It lies at the base of a narrow fjord beneath towering mountains that offer some of the world’s best backcountry skiing. Once a mighty fishing town, Siglufjörður or Siglo as the locals call it, has a long history of fame and fortune linked to the ebb and flow of the fishing industry. A tiny fishing village in 1900, Siglufjörður soon became one of the largest towns in Iceland and the undisputed capital of the Atlantic herring fishery. Although the herring has disappeared, the town bears the distinct imprint of the once lucrative Herring Era. Siglo is now home to Iceland’s renowned Herring Museum.
